The Rate Engine

United States · reference month 2026-05

Auto loans, credit cards and personal loans

The rates most Americans actually deal with, away from the mortgage market — from the Federal Reserve's own survey of commercial banks.

22.15per cent on credit card accounts actually carrying a balance — 1.21 points above the all-accounts average of 20.94%.

Two credit card numbers, and why they differ

The Federal Reserve publishes two credit card rates. The lower one averages every account, including the many that clear their balance monthly and pay no interest at all. The higher one covers only accounts assessed interest — people actually carrying debt. Headlines usually quote the first. The second is what borrowing on a card really costs, and it is the honest figure.

Car loans by term

Longer terms usually price lower per year — the lender is lending against a depreciating asset for longer, but the monthly payment is what most buyers optimise for. Stretching a loan to 72 months lowers the payment and raises the total paid.

What secured debt is worth

A 30-year mortgage currently costs 6.76%. A credit card balance costs 22.15% — roughly 3.3 times as much. That difference is the price of collateral: a house can be repossessed, a card balance cannot.

Federal Reserve G.19 figures are monthly and publish roughly three months in arrears. They cover commercial banks, so credit union and captive-finance rates — often materially different — are not represented here.
